• Animot: “Torn” (group show) Tent Gallery, Edinburgh 2016

This strange little piece is my response to a project looking at use of animal body in contemporary art that a visiting PHD researcher brought to the class for discussion.  He seemed to be one of those people who just wanted to be angry at something  and i found it hard to have a meaningful conversation with him but i did contribute this small piece of work to the group show  ‘ANIMOT’ which was on show at the Tent Gallery for a couple of weeks.  It speaks for itself… is suitably grotesque  - and my only foray into abject art to date.

It seemed to garner a fair amount of attention from passers-by but who knows if it made any impact beyond a few snapshots through the gallery windows.  i find that if we really want to help someone rethink their behaviour or actions for the betterment of themselves and other living creatures  with whom we share the planet then it needs to be a loving conversation. In my experience shocking and shaming doesn’t work to reduce suffering and only succeeds in making the artist or activist more abject than the actions they are trying to minimise or avoid.
