RSA 2023 Submissions: Dark Ecologies

Dyptych: Dark Ecologies, Entangled Agencies

Dark Ecologies is a series of series of intaglio and collograph prints of elemental beauty that are in a sense meta-landscapes .  By engaging various physical and chemical processes which  shape
the land and all life on earth, the artist is revealing something of the way of the world  - not representing the products but revealing the underlying processes that whirl in and around us, that animate us and unite us.

By looking not at them but seeing through them the images become portals revealing something fundamental and essential about the complex systems and networks in which we are entangled, and the unspeakable and irreducible nature of being.

Entering the Grain of the World:

By incorporating fragmented picture of the artist into the printing
medium – (the so called “ghost image” - chemically bonded to Bavarian
lime stone; ground-off and salvaged as part of a previous lithographic project)
the print might be interpreted as a as dissipated or distributed self-portrait..
in a kind of expanded geological or spectral sense.

And so the work speaks to the Anthropocene and the intersection of human history and deep time (in which
humans have become geological agents by changing the chemistry of the planet
and are leaving a collective entry on the earth’s rocky ledger….   and to the strange fact that we are less material entities than
processes through which matter passes; somehow evanescent and yet connected
with the earth across vast geological time-frames .. bound up in the cyclical nature of materiality – momentary
aggregates – vortices of grit and crystal bound by stories and spirit  - the very narrowest point in the hourglass and ecologically entwined in intimate relations with the more-than-human at
every scale .
